To say I love biking is to put it mildly. Everywhere my travels have taken me I always find a bike to ride. I have fond memories of cycling along bucolic countryside villages and city streets, taking in all the new sights and sounds.
When I found out recently that I could fly my Schwinn bike for free with Elite Airways, I jumped at the opportunity to jet from Portland, Maine, direct to sunny Vero Beach, Florida. The check in process at the airport was effortless – off came the front wheel and the pedals, and into a heavy-duty plastic bag my Schwinn bike went.
Flying above the clouds with Elite I imagined biking past towering palm trees and lush terrain. Landing in Vero Beach was like arriving on a tropical island, and my Schwinn Fordham was waiting right there for me to begin the next biking adventure.
Stay: Coste d’Este Vero Beach
Slumber at Singer Gloria Estefan’s chic beachside resort Coste d’ Este. Try and book a lovely main floor Cabana Room for easy bike access and ocean views. After a long day of biking, work up an appetite and indulge in Coste d Este’s The Wave Restaurant’s famous paella dish, which is filled with a delicious medley of seafood. Digest for a bit and get ready to take the plunge in the pool at dusk.
Just a short cycle away from the hotel is lovely Riverside Park. You can easily spend a couple of afternoons there exploring the natural habitat and art museum; they even have a theatre. Bike over a small bridge to Memorial Island, a true oasis where woodpeckers fly from tree to tree, and tall cranes graze along the waters edge (be sure to pack your camera).
River Explorer Boat Tour
The River Explorer Boat Tour leaves from the park. It’s a must do after a day of biking and sightseeing. Tour past mangroves and little islands inhabited by birds. You are bound to spot dolphins showing off, and hopefully a manatee along the way.
Sip & Cycle
It’s time to feel refreshed after a long day of pedaling around Vero Beach. Head over to Countryside Citrus for the best slushie you will ever have: a mix of Florida oranges slush with homemade soft-serve vanilla ice cream. It’s like a delicious Creamsicle in a cup. Grab it to go, and sip and cycle your way to the Vero Beach ocean front boardwalk to watch the sun cast a pinky hue across the sky as it goes down.
