Last year in my Ambassador posts for Schwinn, I focused mainly on my background with the brand, and my reasons for loving bicycles, but that was only half the story. Robin and I have known each other since 1975 when we were in the same 5th grade class. She has been a Bel Air resident almost her whole life, I've lived in a few different zip codes within a 10 mile radius of Bel Air. On the first day of my Junior year of High School at Harford Vocational-Technical HS, I saw Robin get on my … [Read more...]

Robin and I are thrilled and flattered to be returning with Schwinn in 2017 as Schwinn Varsity Ambassadors! We’ve been together for three and a half decades, and married 28 years. We’re parents to a daughter and son in their 20’s, and grandparents to our daughter and son-in-law’s son who live in Frostburg, Maryland. He’ll be 2 in July. I have many interests and hobbies, including all forms of mechanized transportation. I’m a tinkerer with my background in our family owned automotive collision repair business who has been riding, maintaining and rehabilitating bicycles since about the age of 8. Robin is the monetary expert of the family. This year, 2017, will be our 6th year of biking adventures around our home state of Maryland, and surrounding states. Maryland has the nickname of “America in Miniature” and we experience the whole state from the rail trails of the Allegheny Mountains out west, to our neighborhoods in the Northeast, to the Atlantic beach resorts.
On more than one of my blog posts for Schwinn, I've referred to our yearly extended family summer vacation in Ocean City, Maryland. Bicycles by the thousands flock to OC. It was during this vacation (normally in August) in 2010, watching all the bikes along Coastal Highway where I was inspired to restore my vintage Varsity . This year was our 4th year of bringing our bikes to the beach for the week's vacation. My usual ride for OC since 2013 has been on my Ride of a Lifetime sweepstakes … [Read more...]
A question posed to the Brand Ambassadors today got me thinking. The question was: "Where is your favorite place to ride?" Between late March and July, we had covered almost all of our usual routes and one or two less frequently visited areas. I can't really narrow down my favorite place to bike. I can name my favorite time of day to ride. I'm a morning person, so I try to be on the bike by 10 am. Having this great new Vantage F1 Hybrid opened up the idea of adding some more paved … [Read more...]
Back in December when I saw Schwinn was recruiting brand ambassadors, I knew I'd have plenty of stories to tell, and the desire to write has always been right up my alley. One thing, however, made me hesitant to volunteer. I already had a pretty substantial fleet of bicycles and I didn't think I should add another one (or even had room for more). Additionally, with the exception of the Schwinn 411, all three of my other bikes are at least 20 years old (albeit impeccably maintained). But, … [Read more...]
After a frustrating weather pattern in the Mid-Atlantic of warm, beautiful weekdays followed by cold, gray weekends and a slow start to our biking season, Robin and I got the chance to ride one of the more picturesque sections of our favorite (not so far away) bike trail last weekend. The Bentley Springs trail head of the NCR (Northern Central Railroad) Trail, now known as the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail, is about 5 miles south of the Mason-Dixon line in Parkton, MD. Once on the trail you … [Read more...]
My appreciation for Schwinn bicycles sprang from envy of my best friend's red 5 Speed STIK-SHIFT Sting-Ray with the racing slick in the mid-1970's. I had a purple 3-speed Iverson bike that my grandfather bought for me from Toys R Us that I built myself out of the box in their driveway at about 8 years of age. I remember my grandfather buying himself a light blue Schwinn Varsity around the same time, which was about the time he retired from his job. Unfortunately, not long after that his bike … [Read more...]
