The Fresh Prince, otherwise known as Will Smith, defined the perfect summer song with the simple lyrics “summer summer summer time to sit back and unwind.” These words although simple resonate given that the summertime is the one time in the year that one can truly let their hair down and relax or in my case throw their hair in a helmet and ride!
This summer I was fortunate enough to cruise to the sweet words of Mr. Bel Air throughout one of America’s gems with my Schwinn family. As a quintessential American brand it was only fitting to parade the streets with Schwinn Cruisers throughout the iconic American island of Nantucket. As the stomping ground and domestic getaway for many American diplomats, officials and of course bicycling enthusiasts, Nantucket is the perfect place to get lost in.
To truly grasp the New England aesthetic Schwinn utilized the Airbnb and rented a beautiful 5-bedroom dream home, named the “Incandescence”, that was as we liked to say “soooooo ACK.” This dream home looked like it was straight off the set of a cover of Better Home and Gardens. Inside was beautifully decorated with a subtle nautical theme that had a chicness that oozed a timeless classic appeal. Although beautiful and grand the home had such a “homey” feel to it that matched the sincerity and beautiful group of Schwinn brand ambassadors that breathed life into the place throughout our trip. Despite the beautiful interior décor and island touch the trendiest and bright addition to the house was none other than the rainbow fleet of shiny demure bikes that glistened on the outside of the house. From each range of the color spectrum each bike was a force to be reckoned with. Some of the bikes looked like they were made just for Nantucket with a patriotic monochromatic frame and perfectly weaved basket that would make even Jackie O bat an eye.
With our HGTV, Nantucket edition, home ready all that was left was for our amazing and talented Schwinn brand ambassadors to arrive! The brand ambassadors are such a phenomenal diverse group of individuals. Each of them stem from the far nether regions of the country in various different stages of life. We have talented mothers who love their family dearly. We have strong adventurous globetrotters who yearn to see the world and all it has to offer. We have independent women who literally do it all. We have independent women who wear many hats. We have women who are fighters that overcome their life situations. Although these women stem from different worlds they all represent the Schwinn woman and share a love for riding their bikes.
Since the Schwinn ambassador program started we have stalked each other’s lives on social media getting a peek into each other’s lives by the way of “the gram.” Finally we were able to see the magic behind these women with their contagious laughter, quirky mannerisms and our shared love for FOOD! People say that social media is a tinted lens to one’s life but let me disclose and let everyone know that these ladies are truly this stylish, breathtaking and bike savvy. We coined the terms sassy and fleeky for chic, riveting and trendy looks. After a while it became the go to word because everyone was again “sooooo ACK” and looked like island natives. Nantucket upholds the New England name very well. The residents have such a unique aesthetic that consists of nautical stripes, bright colors and of course and fun pair of sunnies. With all that being said it was easy for our ambassadors to blend it with the locals. However, one thing that may have helped us stand out was that, unlike a majority of islanders we had brought our most fleeky and sassy trend to the island, our helmets.
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety and the Bike Helmet Statistics by www.helmets.org “helmet use has been estimated to reduce the odds of head injury by 50 percent, and the odds of head, face, or neck injury by 33 percent.” Nantucket is such a peaceful island with great law enforcement and infrastructure that it is conducive for a great bike ride. However one should always be safe and ride with a helmet.
Throughout our time on the island the brand ambassadors had the opportunity to speak with various media outlets and share their individual stories on why they ride their bikes. Towards the end of the media activation it was so beautiful to see and hear the brand ambassadors encourage the media professionals to throw on their helmets for a safe ride. At that moment it was evident how it easy it is to help make a huge life changing decision. Moments like that really make it apparent why Schwinn has these awesome brand ambassadors. These ladies are truly representatives of the brand. Schwinn makes it so fun and easy to throw on a helmet with their creative array of models and colors that fit any style. By far the fan favorite helmet among the brand ambassadors was none other than the egg shaped “Schwinn Adult Chic Women’s Bike Helmet- Blue” retailed at Target for a whopping $24.99.
With our helmets strapped on we were ready to take on the island! What better way to engage with the island than riding a bike? It was like a dream riding past the beautiful homes seeing the occasional bunny and deer scurry past you while the sea breeze flows through your hair. With such a creative group, everywhere we rode to was a photo-op. We kick started our biking journey to the beach. Madequecham beach was the frequent pit stop for our trip. The serene beach was surrounded by a wave of picturesque oceanfront homes that overlooked the calming waters of the sea. It was the perfect destination to park our bikes and simply get lost gazing at the crashing waves.
The coastline of the island is ideal for any bike rider. The island itself is very bike friendly due to the excellent infrastructure and there are bike lanes that lead straight to the beach. After setting the kickstands in the sand one couldn’t help but feel like they were on the scene of Baywatch parading through the sand in slow motion. The lifeguard stand made for a perfect place to peer into the water and look at the sea life that jetted through the ACK waters. During an excursion to the beach the Schwinn crew greeted by a group of seals bobbing in and out of the water inviting us to play hide and seek. We eventually took the seals’ invitation and endeavored on the second best way to see Nantucket, sailing.
Yep, that’s right the Schwinn team traded their two wheels for a good ole classic sail. Nantucket is enriched and filled with so much history. The sea continues to be the cornerstone for the island. The early island inhabitants shot for the waters in search of what some could call the “gold of the sea”, whale oil. Although we never came across the legendary Moby Dick the ambassadors felt like mighty seamen as we treaded through the waters singing tunes aboard the endeavor lead by Captain Jim. Equipped in our sailing stripes and straw hats we enjoyed the sea breeze with the most iconic combination known to man, wine and Cheez-its.
Wine and Cheez-its may be a delicacy in the eyes of the ambassadors, but Nantucket offers a tremendous selection of food for all the foodies out there especially for all you seafood lovers. You name it ACK has it! From lust worthy BBQ, classic “David” pizza, lobsters macaroni and fresh lobster rolls you are sure in for a major food coma. Not to mention the brewery and winery on the island! Riding bikes all day can wear the bike rock star; champ Peter Sagan, out so it was only necessary for us to eat everything in sight, for “health reasons.” Although eating out and tasting the craftsmanship of the island chefs was phenomenal nothing beat the culinary skills that were dormant inside of the Schwinn Ambassadors.
The Schwinn team channeled our inner Rachel Ray and through on apron and we went to work at The Nantucket Culinary Center. The Culinary center and attached restaurant is owned by Chef Greg Margolis. Greg is a charismatic chef who taught us the tricks of the trade when it came to wooing in the kitchen. We all assembled marveling the intricate techniques of making our fan favorite Salmon and quinoa dish. Essentially, playing following the leader, we each took turns chopping vegetables, seasoning salmon and stirring the pot in more ways than one with our laughter and jokes that filled the kitchen with an aroma of excitement. At the end of playing celebrity chef and preparing our meal we had to let the inner biker in us roam free. We created a culinary masterpiece that would make Le Cordon Bleu gasp in amazement. The Schwinn team made the classic cruiser bike out of the delicious food we made. The food and experience at the Nantucket Culinary Center was so immaculate that we were definitively in a food coma ready to relax and shavasana.
Schwinn Cruisers, especially the Sivica, make a day full of riding feel like a little stroll in the park. Between the comfortable memory foam seats and the relaxed position plus geometry one would forget that they are even riding. On an island like Nantucket comfort is key and there is no better way to get around than biking. Strolling through the streets of ACK, whether that is the Sconset bluff walk or Sankaty lighthouse, wouldn’t nearly have been as fun without my new found friends.
All of the ambassadors are so unique and stem from different worlds but all share a love and passion for biking. Some of us may bike for health reasons, some for leisure and some for sport but we each value the power of the pedal and therefore we are all family. I couldn’t have asked for a more incredible a more incredible group to share this beautiful island with. Each of these ladies has become dear friends to me and I am tremendously blessed to be a part of the Schwinn family. To the Schwinn leadership team you each have enriched my life with so much joy and wonder. You each continuously expand my horizons. I thank you for making the joy of biking contagious. My name is David Lowe and I am a Schwinn Ambassador and will always be a part of the Sch”winning” team. Cheers to biking, “fleeky” ACK and enjoying that good ole “summer summer summertime.”
