Schwinn creates first line of children’s bikes to properly fit their proportions
Madison, Wisc. – April 5, 2016 – Schwinn, a brand of Dorel Industries, Inc. (TSX: DII.B, DII.A), today announced the launch of Schwinn SmartStart bikes. The brand has completely redesigned its line of children’s bicycles from the ground up in order to better fit a child’s body and riding needs. Schwinn SmartStart bikes are designed to offer children maximum comfort and confidence on two wheels, making learning to ride more fun.
“SmartStart places Schwinn as a leader in the category of children’s bicycle design,” said Dave Duecker, Vice President of Product for Schwinn. “With our newly redesigned bicycles, we are creating a better fitting bike for children while instilling confidence and getting them excited to ride bikes.”
Schwinn has redesigned all of its 12 inch, 14 inch, 16 inch, 18 inch and 20 inch wheeled bicycles to properly fit a child’s proportion addressing key touch points on the bike such as leverage, gearing, comfort and weight.
Schwinn’s SmartStart geometry makes learning to ride a bike easier for kids. It increases a child’s leverage by matching pedal width to the child’s hip width while also pushing the pedals slightly forward. “This is similar to the build of a tricycle,” said Josh Vick, Director of Product for Schwinn. “This allows for easier and increased pedaling as well as better balance.”
Additionally, each bike is equipped with seats and grips designed to support smaller bodies. Combined with a lighter bike frame, this helps a child maintain control of their bike.
“We are eager to see the response from parents,” said Milissa Rick, Senior Director of Marketing for Schwinn. “With our Schwinn SmartStart bicycles, we are ultimately improving the learn-to-ride experience.”
Schwinn SmartStart bikes are available now for the spring riding season through mass retailers including Target, Toys R Us, and Walmart with pricing starting at under $100USD.
