Warm weather is finally here and prime biking season is underway. June is another busy month at Schwinn with all kinds of exciting biking events in the works. With that comes lots of planning and involvement from our marketing team, so, we thought, who better to write about this month than our marketing pro Milissa Rick? Milissa incorporates biking into her routine as much as possible, and loves the benefits that come along with riding. Read on to get an inside look at how biking has impacted Milissa’s life, and how she plays an active role in getting bikes into the hands of people like you.
Schwinn: What do you do at Schwinn?
Milissa: I am a Schwinn Brand Champion! Aka Senior Director of Marketing.
Schwinn: How long have you been with Schwinn?
Milissa: I have been working on Schwinn marketing for 4 years.
Schwinn: You haven’t always been a cyclist but now you have several bikes and enjoy getting outside. Tell us about that.
Milissa: Since working at Pacific Cycle – the parent company of Schwinn – I started riding a variety of disciplines including on the bike path, road cycling and mountain biking. Each of those riding experiences provide a different benefit to me. While all of them are great for my physical and mental health, I look forward to riding the bike paths with my family and spending quality time with them enjoying new landscapes in our state. Sharing new experiences with my kids and husband is a great reward of this family activity. My road bike allows me to sneak in some fitness during the work day with colleagues, especially because our office is near the bike path and I am able to do rides over the lunch hour. Finally, I just started mountain biking last year and again, this allows me to enjoy time with colleagues, but challenges me in new ways. Single track mountain bike riding is both a mental and physical exercise. It engages a variety of muscles different from road cycling. Of the three types of riding, mountain biking is most challenging for me, and I enjoy a challenge! All of my bikes are my favorites, but my real go-to is my Schwinn Fastback road bike.
Schwinn: What do you think about on your rides?
Milissa: It depends on my mood. Sometimes I become very present mentally when riding my bike, which allows me to practice being more mindful. This is really important during our extremely busy lives. Other times I use the time to problem solve and think through challenges with a new perspective. Biking always puts me in a good mood.
Schwinn: Do you prefer biking alone or with others?
Milissa: I definitely prefer biking with people. I’m a super social person and get easily motivated by others. Those people challenge me to go further and ride faster.
Schwinn: What’s your go-to bike outfit?
Milissa: For any ride over eight miles I definitely wear chamois. They’re a must. I always wear a helmet and usually glasses to protect my eyes.
Schwinn: What would you say to someone who is nervous to try biking?
Milissa: Don’t be. Find a friend or family member who you feel comfortable with and are open to taking advice from. Ask them if they would go for a beginning ride with you. Once you get on the bike you’ll find yourself smiling. You’ll feel the breeze in your hair and remember the days you first learned to ride.
