Last Spring Schwinn got a little sneaky and intercepted three moms buying bikes for their kids at a local, Madison, WI, Toys R Us (read the article here). This year we decided to continue the tradition by gifting one mom (Nicole) shopping with her daughter, both brand new Schwinn bicycles. We asked Nicole if she had a bicycle, what kind it was, how old it was, and if she was ready for a change. Nicole like most mothers, know what it is like to juggle five hundred things at once, and how difficult it can be to make time for yourself and time with your kids. She and her daughter graciously accepted the challenge to get on the Schwinn Carrington and a kids SmartStart bicycle two days a week, and then come back and tell us about their experience.
Nicole: The last new bike I bought was when I was in 8th grade. I had saved some of my own money to help purchase it. I used this bike through college before I let it go because it was so old. This is the next bike I received… after about 15 years without one! I was so excited to get the Carrington, it is beautiful! I didn’t realize how much I had missed bike riding as an activity.
Schwinn: Was it hard to make time to go out and ride the bike?
Nicole: It was a little hard in the first week because of our busy schedule and recently sick kids. However, summer vacation is around the corner, and days will be much more carefree! I picture many evening rides as a family after dinner.
Schwinn: How did it feel to make time to ride by yourself and with your family?
Nicole: Great! I took a ride with my girls around the neighborhood right away. It was really enjoyable! It was especially satisfying to hear my 5 year old repeat over and over how much fun she was having! I feel that we have found a new fun family activity that we didn’t have before. I am already looking forward to the weekend, and summer nights so that we can head out together again!
Schwinn: How was your child’s experience on the Schwinn SmartStart bicycle, did you notice any differences?
Nicole: It was really great! She has never gotten a new bike, just her sister’s hand me downs. With her old bike, she has been big enough to ride it for over a year, but rarely got on it because she seemed intimidated. This bike was different. She was so excited because it was her very own, and it was beautiful! She got right on and rode without fear. It seemed more stable for her (still with training wheels), because Schwinn fitted it just to her size. Her first ride even surprised her by how enjoyable it was! She is now really looking forward to her “bike day” at her school to show it off to her friends.
Schwinn: Was it easier you as a parent to work with your child on the Schwinn SmartStart bike.
Nicole: It was easier because I didn’t need to convince her to get on her bike. She was excited to do it all on her own. She has never wanted to ride longer than down the street and the very first time on this bike she wanted to ride the neighborhood!
Schwinn: What are some of the struggles you faced teaching your older daughter how to ride?
Nicole: I forgot about the small initial fears of riding, like small hills, and crossing streets. I had to walk my bike during these times so that I could hold hers while she rode. I know this stage will be short lived, and she will get more comfortable with more experience. Hitting the neighborhood trails should also help. The next struggle will be when we take off the training wheels. My older child learned to ride fairly quickly because we taught her by taking off her pedals. It seemed to make the process go much more smoothly.
For my younger daughter I feel the bike will help her get over her fear of small hills more quickly because it does feel very stable to her when she is riding. I know she feels more safe on this bike than she did on the other one because it seems very secure. It also seems much easier for her to pedal compared to the other bike. It also has many nice features that make it easy to adjust with her as she grows so it will be a good fit for quite a while.
Schwinn: Do you think you will keep riding after this interview?
Nicole: Absolutely! I look forward to doing this regularly all summer!
Schwinn: What was your favorite part about the bike?
Nicole: I love that the bike is so beautiful and smooth to ride. I love that it has brought a new family activity to my life. It was always important for me to have bikes for my children, but I never made myself a priority. Now instead of the girls riding up and down our street while I watch, we have a great activity to do together to get exercise.
Schwinn: What would you say to encourage other friends who have children to try to get on a bike either for themselves or with their family?
Nicole: I would say it is worth it to make themselves a priority! By doing so, they will give their family a great new activity to do together. It is so important to try and find active things to do together to instill a healthy way of living in our children. Biking is a great sport, because you never grow out of it! It is a great way to get out and enjoy nature and one another!
