It is officially SUMMER and it looks like the theme of my summer will be #AllIDoIsSchwinnSchwinnSchwinnNoMatterWhat! After moving to the core of Saskatoon, I have barely left the side of my Schwinn Vantage F1. I have finally been able to take advantage of Saskatoon’s protected (and green-coloured) bike lanes that run the length of two downtown streets – daily! I am so pleased to hear that Saskatoon is committing to improving active transportation over the next few years and beyond, which will include more protected bike lanes.
A friend of mine who enjoys cycling but fears for her safety when cycling through places like downtown shared with me that she would absolutely cycle downtown if there were more protected bike lanes. Given that the majority of the population in Saskatoon lives in a suburb, or along the perimeters of the core, protected bike lanes – or even any kind of bike lane – would encourage more active transportation within, to, and from all areas of the city. Especially with all of the construction always going on, cycling has the added benefit of bypassing traffic jams and construction zones!
My commute to work is now down to 10 minutes from 30 minutes, and my new condo building has extra secure bike-lockups in the underground parkade, so I do not need to worry about ever leaving my beloved Schwinn outside overnight! My vehicle use has gone down to once per week on average, which is when I drive to my parents’ house for family suppers on Sundays, followed by a grocery trip to get me through the next week. I already felt like I was cycling frequently, but my active transportation has absolutely increased since moving to my new condo – so much that I need to keep on top of ensuring the air in my tires is optimized!
The other thing I love about having a much shorter commute is that I can shower at home in the morning, instead of showering at work after I arrive. I am very lucky, however, to have access to an excellent shower and change room facility at my workplace, which I still do use from time to time, such as after teaching a spin class at Ryde YXE Cycle Studio, where I am yet again on a Schwinn bike!
Even though it is summer, my commitments and responsibilities do not change – so I can be found Schwinning out and about through the streets of Saskatoon as I go from one thing to the next!
Have a Schwonderful and Schunny Schummer and ride safe!
